Department Overview
The laboratories at Children's Hospitals and Clinics are full service facilities that offer a complete spectrum of laboratory techniques for the evaluation of pediatric disorders. Laboratories are located on both the Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses and and provide services on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Disciplines include Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Virology, Serology, Blood Bank, Immunology/Flow Cytometry, Histology and Pathology.
Position Summary
Responsible for specimen receipt, assessment, and pre-analytical processing services per written policies and procedures. Enters information and test orders into the laboratory computer system and responds to a high volume of phone calls seeking testing information. Identifies, troubleshoots and resolves problems. Interacts with colleagues, patients and their families in a pleasant, efficient and cooperative manner. Performs blood collections in a safe, accurate and professional manner on all age groups and degrees of difficulty. Provides a variety of other services including but not limited to sweat sodium collection, glucose tolerance testing.
License/Certification/Registration required? No
Education: *High school diploma or equivalent required. *Coursework in science or healthcare. *Associate's degree preferred.
Experience: *One year of experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred. *Pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: *Strong attention to detail and accuracy. *Ability to work in a fast paced environment to meet established turnaround times. *Possesses outstanding professional and positive customer service skills. *Must have excellent problem solving and follow up skills. *Solid knowledge of medical terminology. *Must be highly organized, efficient, and multifunctional, work independently and within a team. *Demonstrates a forward thinking approach, continually looking for ways to improve processes, tools and resources to best serve the healthcare team and clients. *Ability to manage challenging situations in providing services to patients and families. *Collects specimens using knowledge of laboratory techniques.
