Occupational Summary
Perform routine histopathological tests in a clinical laboratory for use in the treatment and diagnosis of disease.
Work Performed
Accessioning all surgical pathology specimens
Specimen identification and information
Gross small specimens may include but are not limited to GI, GU and GYN biopsies, skin biopsies and skin excisions, heart biopsies, lung biopsies, bone marrow biopsies and clots and other small cases as assigned
Attending service assignments
Specimen priority assignment
Cutting and staining frozen sections
Special processing GI biopsies
Assessing decalcification adequacy
Packing blocks for transport to Histology
Communicate effectively with clinicians and pathologists
Complete required safety trainings and maintain working knowledge of department safety and operating procedures
Assist Lead in data collection for QA/QI initiatives and assessing technician
Participate in training of technical staff, students, and pathology residents
Participate in shared on-call rotation
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated compet ency in histological laboratory skills. Ability to perform assigned task s on routine and special material.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Bachelors of Science/Bachelor of Arts in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology. Must meet the CLIA/CAP Education Requirements established to perform high complexity testing. Minimum educational or experience requirements may be modified on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendmen) director as long as minimal CLIA requirements are met by the employee for the tasks being performed
Experience
Histotechnician with at least 1 year of experience in a histology or surgical pathology laboratory.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
ASCP Certified or certification eligible (must obtain HTL certification in 18 months (about 1 and a half years)).
