This position serves as a Lead Medical Technician in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Grand Junction VA Medical Center in Grand Junction, Colorado. Primary duties include preparing and examining specimens, maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment, and leading other technicians including distributing workload among employees, reviewing work performed by technicians, and providing on the job training to new and existing employees. In order to qualify for this position, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal service that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled (Lead Medical Technician)? Specialized experience: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field (e.g., biological laboratory technician work) that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled - performing work in a clinical laboratory where the majority of the work is in support of patient diagnosis and/or treatment; performing both routine and specialized processing, tests and examinations in anatomic pathology; implementing and following proper protocols in receiving/collecting, sorting, recording, storing and/or shipping of clinical laboratory specimens; and leading other Medical Technicians in specimen processing; OR EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successful completion of one full year of graduate-level education directly related to the work of this position - performing work in a clinical laboratory where the majority of the work is in support of patient diagnosis and/or treatment; performing both routine and specialized processing, tests and examinations in anatomic pathology; implementing and following proper protocols in receiving/collecting, sorting, recording, storing and/or shipping of clinical laboratory specimens; and leading other Medical Technicians in specimen processing. Calibrates and maintains laboratory instrumentation and equipment at timely and/or established intervals to minimize break downs and delay of procedures. Ensures that sufficient supply of reagents, standards and controls are available at all times. Maintains laboratory supplies and equipment in such a manner as to provide safety and efficiency of laboratory operations. Monitors quality control of testing systems as required.
