JOB SUMMARY
Technical Supervisor, Laboratory Services provides leadership oversight to pre-analytical, specimen collection, specimen processing and/or laboratory support areas. As a leader in these areas, the supervisor must be an expert in specimen identification, specimen integrity, specimen accessioning and the best laboratory practice. Supervises the daily operations of a Laboratory Division or major function of a Clinical Laboratory. Possesses the technical and leadership skills to supervise personnel; coordinate operations, organize and improve workflow for the division; and communicate with staff, management, and senior leadership.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Responsible for recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, supervision, evaluation, competency assessment, coaching, disciplinary action and/or termination process of divisional employees.
Supervises daily and technical operations and quality management activities for the division.
Supervises the work of laboratory personnel engaged in performing routine and specialized technical procedures, including planning laboratory work, evaluating work performed, and handling procedural and technical laboratory problems.
Develops, reviews, and revises policies and procedures in accordance with departmental, hospital, and regulatory standards.
Coordinates review and revision of the Laboratory Test Directory.
Responsible for ensuring that the laboratory division functions with the appropriate level of staff to guarantee an efficient operation.
Reviews and evaluates accuracy of lab data and reports patient results with all required documentation.
Ability to work independently within established guidelines, apply problem-solving skills, meet deadlines and meet urgent patient, provider, and system needs.
Assists personnel with complex procedures, exercising independent judgment and responsibility.
Responsible for all Quality Management activities including but not limited to evaluating quality of reported test results, quality control and equipment maintenance procedures, proficiency testing and verifying appropriate documentation is maintained and corrective actions are implemented as necessary.
Participates in the establishment and implementation of the quality assurance and continuous process improvement program including quality monitors, incident reports, corrective actions, and documentation.
Responsible for developing, evaluating, and implementing all new procedures, reagents, systems, and instruments for use in the division.
Prepares financial reports and works closely with division leadership.
Maintains a sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment for the performance of daily duties.
Ensures staff comply with requirements for continuing education and verifies documentation for departmental records.
Communicates pertinent information to staff members, management, medical directors, and other divisions.
Performs routine laboratory procedures/tests as needed.
Instructs and trains students.
Available to cover different shifts if requested to guarantee patient care.
Responsible for maintaining compliance with regulatory accreditation standards.
Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
Adheres to all safety protocols in each laboratory area.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a Clinical Laboratory Science or Basic Science with four (4) years related experience. Must have previous leadership experience.
Must fulfill overall qualifications as a General Supervisor under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA).
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS
Required:
Technologist level certification from either the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or equivalent certification.
Preferred:
Specialty certification in the area of operation issued by one of following organizations: ASCP or AMT
