Summary: The Operating Room Assistant, under the guidance of the registered nurse, is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and patient flow as a member of the Operating Room Team.
Other information: Previous environmental services or sterilization experience preferred. Ability to interface with public and communicate in a positive and professional manner.
Responsibilities: Ensures presence of appropriate and properly functioning furniture for each operating room on an ongoing basis--correct OR table, back table(s), mayo stand(s), prep table, kick buckets, trash/laundry containers with liners, etc. Assists RNs and ORTs with room set-up by anticipating needs prior to scheduled case time--specialty carts, equipment, etc.--by placing items immediately outside operating rooms for pending procedures. Assists RNs and ORTs with assembly of specialty surgical tables. Assists with patient positioning appropriately. Assists with surgical skin prep per holding patient extremities Assists with restocking of supplies for the OR, Anesthesia Department, and PACU. Performs daily A-Test/Biological indicators for OR sterilizers and Steris units--log results appropriately. Performs room turn around activities by removing appropriate equipment, assisting with patient transport from OR table, cleaning of room per established protocol, and returning equipment to designated locations. Maintains terminal cleaning protocol for the OR and PACU per established guidelines. Daily monitoring and documentation of department refrigerator logs--weekly cleaning of refrigerators. Ensures timely transport of end of case supply carts to SPD as well as specimen transport to Pathology via SPD per established guidelines. Performs messenger/runner duties appropriately--medication pick up and delivery from Pharmacy, accomplish errands as directed by the OR Desk RN or department PCC, retrieval of blood products as per established guidelines, delivery of special circumstances surgical specimens--Frozen Section, Fresh Exam, C & S, etc.--to Pathology. Performs patient transport to and from the OR/PACU to include providing patient comfort measures, following all safety procedures, and reporting patient concerns to the OR Desk RN or department PCC.
