Employee will serve as a Pathology Specialist within Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service located at the Desert Pacific Veterans Healthcare System in Long Beach, CA. The purpose of this position is to manage the operations of the Anatomic Pathology section within a large, highly complex medical center laboratory. Preferred Experience/Certification: Certification as a Pathologists' Assistant (PA) from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is highly desired. Basic Education Requirement (Transcript Required): Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. AND Specialized Experience: Requires one full year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: performing gross examination and sectioning of every type of surgical pathology specimens and preparing specimens for microscopic examination and pathologic diagnosis; removing and dissecting organs to demonstrate the presence or absence of disease and/or atomic variation; sectioning tissues and body fluids for further examination; performing autopsies and frozen tissue sections; and educating/training residents/ students in Anatomic Pathology and Autopsy procedures. Utilizes voice activated dictation system or alternative in support of grossing and autopsy duties. Develops and/or revises standard operating procedures and establishing performance standards to improve or extend test systems; and evaluates, modifies or adapts new methods to meet the requirements of particular testing situations. Performs or requests specialized tests including histochemical and immunohistochemical stains and cytometry and interpreting the results. Researches, evaluates, orders, and implements new equipment and procures related supplies. Photographs gross specimens and maintains a file of gross photographs for teaching purposes. Performs SNOMED and other required Anatomic Pathology workload coding. Oversees the morgue for adherence to facility and regulatory safety, quality control, and privacy regulations. Investigates and resolves problems related to Anatomic Pathology. Provides training to Anatomic Pathology laboratory staff and students. Performs other duties, as necessary.
