The Histotechnologist is resonsible for accession, gross and describe small surgical specimens, maintain automated tissue processors, process tissue, perform all basic histologic functions to prepare slides for diagnosis by a pathologist, help coordinate both complex and simple problem solving, and help maintain lab functions.

Principal Responsibilities
- Assist with high level department functions including preparation of laboratory inspections, training and orientation of new employees, developing new techniques, maintaining procedure manuals, and improving efficiency and workflow of the department.
- Assist the histology manager in solving problems including discrepancies in specimens, requisitions, demographic and billing information.
- Perform basic histology functions including grossing of small/uncomplicated specimens, embedding, sectioning, routine staining, and coverslipping using manual techniques and automated instruments.
- Operate and maintain all instrumentation including automated coverslippers and stainers, automated tissue processors, embedding instrumentation, and microtomes and cryostats.
- Assist pathologists with preparation of frozen sections including microtomy and staining.
- Assist in all documentation and clerical functions in the histology lab including accessioning specimens into the computer system, maintaining quality assurance and control records, function logs, workload logs, and slide and cassette files.
- Assist in ordering and maintaining supplies for the department.
- Investigate, interpret, and help solve all problems with reactions, staining, protocols, and procedures associated with processing and preparation of tissue specimens for diagnosis by a pathologist.
- Comply with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.
- Adhere to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training & accomplishments as required per policy.
- Provide excellent customer service and adhere to SC Way customer service philosophy.

Education/Experience
- Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, laboratory science or related field required.
Licenses/Certificates
- HTL (ASCP) certification required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must meet CLIA requirements for high complexity testing in a histology Laboratory.
- Must be able to stand, bend over and walk for long periods of time.
- Must be able to lift occasional light load up to 20 lbs.
- Must be able to handle heavy workloads, competing demands and stress well.
