What you'll bring to the role:
* Ph.D. with at least 10 years' experience in experimental hematology or closely related field, with supporting publication record. Experience with HSC biology, molecular biology, and/or immunology is strongly preferred * Demonstrated expertise with Hematopoietic Stem Cell Biology (HSC) biology to establish the in vitro and in vivo models required for establishing drug discovery programs with experience with optimizing gene delivery into HSC or CAR-T biology * The candidate will have a demonstrable record of accomplishment of driving and supporting multiple research projects, and contributions as an author to high-impact, peer-reviewed publications in the field * Leadership experience, including direct reporting and peer-management is required * Will possess excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to thrive in a dynamic matrix research environment. * Creative problem-solving skills; excellent analytical, communication and organizational skills.

This position will be in the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR), the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on leveraging the breadth of innovation and novel modalities in the development of breakthrough therapies for patients.
NIBR's Regenerative Medicine research group in San Diego California is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative PhD-level Sr. Principal Scientist to build lead a Hematology team dedicated to innovating the next generation of ex vivo engineered therapies as well as moving towards transformative in vivo interventions. The team will focus initially on Sickle Cell Disease and eventually explore aspects of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) regeneration and HSC-based therapies.
As a leader of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team, you will lead the design and execution of in vitro and in vivo studies enabling the validation and development of innovative cell therapy platforms, genome editing technology, and novel modes of delivery. This exciting role will interface with experts throughout the company in genetic and protein engineering, screening platforms, and translational medicine. The discoveries we make can contribute directly to improving efficacy and accessibility of gene and cell-based therapies to patients.
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* You will assume a leadership role in the development of novel therapeutic concepts and will contribute at all stages of a project, from inception, validation, candidate selection and through to early clinical development of novel therapies * You will work closely with complementary subject matter experts to develop project strategy, identify key drug discovery issues, propose and implement creative solutions, and guide teams to critical decision points. * Utilization of in vitro and ex vivo cellular manipulations, and in vivo hematological models * Propose and explore new research directions, projects, and/or new technologies. * Self-motivation, ability to work independently, passion for working in an interdisciplinary, collaborative research environment * Manage a team of associates with relevant, diverse expertise
