This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Board Certified Pathologist in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Preferred Experience: Experience managing complex health care programs and departments related to laboratory and pathology. The successful candidate will share in providing a wide range of onsite services in all areas of the general laboratory including but not limited to Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology, Autopsy services, Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Urinalysis, Immunology, Serology, Microbiology, and Blood Bank. The anatomical laboratory processed and interpreted in the last year over 5,000 surgical specimens, over 1,000 Pap smears, over 500 non-gynecological cytology specimens, over 125 bone marrows, and has averaged 6 autopsies over recent years. The clinic laboratory operates 24/7 and reported out approximately 1.7 million tests last year. Besides the main campus, four (4) CAP accredited VA laboratories function at outpatient clinics, as well as two (2) draw stations, and one (1) contract, non-VA clinic. Duties and Responsibilities of the Chief Pathology and Laboratory Medical Service (P&LMS) include, but are not limited to the following: Laboratory administrative functions, such as medical directorship of all sections. Is ultimately responsible for diagnostic interpretation of specimens processed within the laboratory. Anatomical Pathology: Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology (including FNA performance and interpretation) and autopsy consultation. Clinical Pathology: consultation in area of interest/expertise; general support as necessary. Provides pathology and laboratory medicine expertise in a laboratory which provides service to patients at the main hospital, outpatient clinics and rural health clinics. Participates in professional, educational and administrative activities/duties of P&LMS, VHSO, as appropriate. Plans and evaluates new and existing programs and procedures as medical, administrative, technical, logistical and financial needs are identified and as recruited to do so. Assess need for change in policies and procedures in order to provide the appropriate type and level of services in relation to available resources. Takes appropriate leadership role (Medical Director) with supervisor of section, as appropriate, to accomplish the changes needed, within the framework of the P&LMS. Works in cooperation with other VISN facilities to provide pathology expertise and coverage when needed. Serves as the doctoral level expert in his/her area(s) of professional expertise. Establishes and promotes an atmosphere of cooperation and integration of clinical/administrative roles. Participation in multi-disciplinary conferences such as Cancer Conference, Tumor Board, Infection Control, Laboratory Utilization Committee, and Tissue/Transfusion Committee. Oversight if Quality Assurance measures including 10% retrospective review of all anatomic pathology cases, VHA mandated surgical pathology review guidelines, and inter-laboratory comparison programs. Completes the minimum required continuing medical education (CME) in order to maintain licensure/privileges.
