The Core Research Assistant I will carry out the day-to-day flow of the lab under the direction of the Managing Director or Scientific Coordinator. Under minimal supervision, the Core Research Assistant I will perform Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) or flow cytometric analysis on resource-user provide samples. Under minimal supervision, the Core RAI will need to use discretion and independent judgment to optimally setup experiments, monitor progress and report results to the end-user or manager. The Core RA I may be called upon to explain results to Core customers under manager's supervision. Other core laboratory and research functions, which may include appropriately documenting and billing services provided, and general laboratory preparation may be required.
Key Functions and Expected Performances:
Under direct supervision, gain a comprehensive understanding of Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting and Analytical Flow Cytometry.
No work experience is necessary, the Core RA I will be trained on-site by Flow Cytometry Shared Resource Staff
Training will include principles of flow cytometry and fluorescence, instrument operation, instrument maintenance, data analysis, cell staining and assay optimization
Under minimal supervision, plan, conduct and evaluate experiments and assays of varying complexity
Understand, optimize, and follow experimental protocols
Record, compile, track, and report data
Analyze and interpret data
Assist in workflow design and problem solving
Provide training to new staff
Ensure laboratory is prepared for experiments
Maintain inventories and order reagents
Maintain sterile conditions as required
Maintain the instrument/equipment used for services provided by the core
Read and follow all equipment manuals
Maintain equipment according to established guidelines
Provide training to researchers in instrument/equipment operation
Assist in troubleshooting instrument/equipment problems
Will utilize the CORES system for scheduling and to ensure services are accomplished accurately and on time
This position requires a bachelor's degree in a scientifically relevant field. This is an entry-level position with no specific flow cytometry experience necessary. Both spoken and written English is necessary.
