Under the general supervision of a Supervisor, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Lead Medical laboratory Scientist or Charge Tech, the Medical Laboratory Technician I (MLT I) comprehends and follows established procedures for collecting and processing biological specimens for analysis. Perform procedures in one or more of these technical disciplines that require limited independent judgment: chemistry, microbiology, immunology, hematology, immunohematology and molecular diagnostics. Performs and documents QC procedures; reviews QC data and maintenance records. Recognizes unexpected results and instrument malfunction and takes appropriate action. Maintains and prepares reagents. Performs scheduled and unscheduled instrument maintenance. Provides laboratory information to authorized sources. Demonstrates laboratory technical skills to other laboratory personnel.
This is an entry-level technical position in the laboratory. May be promoted to a Medical Laboratory Technician II with 5 years of experience or to a Medical Laboratory Scientist with the completion of a BS degree in Medical Laboratory Science or other Health-related Science. The Medical Lab Technician 1 with a minimum of two years of experience may be assigned the duties of the Charge Technician when necessary, and may be required to work alone.
Must have an Associate in Science in Medical Laboratory Technology OR a 52 week military training certificate OR be a Senior Bachelor of Science student in Medical Technology, with successful completion of on campus courses and currently participating in clinical laboratory rotations at Bayhealth Medical Center.
Must be eligible to sit for national MLT certification exam within one year. Must have basic computer skills & working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Lotus Notes and Clinical Database software. Must have normal color perception.
