Incumbent is entrusted with responsibility for independently receiving, accessioning, distributing, processing, transporting, evaluating, and storing specimens for reference lab testing and performing a wide variety of complex and difficult tests as assigned for the medical center. Incumbent also has the responsibility of handling patient/provider referral of incoming calls, patient report scanning, customer service to Veterans and staff and provision of laboratory specimen referral support. Performs a wide variety of routine and non-routine lab order and sample processing and testing in the areas of Histology, Cytology, phlebotomy, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, hematology, and coagulation as assigned within established guidelines for accuracy, precision and time limits using manual and complex automated analytical systems/equipment. Performs quality control procedures and monitors quality control systems to ensure that reagents, media, assigned equipment, etc. are functioning properly to include but not limited to preventative maintenance, temperature checks, instrument troubleshooting, etc. Recognizes instrument or equipment malfunctions or trends, initiates corrective action when necessary. Refers to Operational Manual (or other available information) or contact the vendor or manufacturer, if indicated. Maintains and documents the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment. Maintains laboratory in a clean and safe condition according to agency and accreditation requirements. Receives, processes, organizes, and distributes a wide variety of specimens from various inpatient and outpatient care areas ensuring that the physiological state of the properties is maintained. Evaluates specimens to determine their suitability for analysis, requesting new specimens, if determined to be unusable, ensuring each sample has the correct UID (Unique Identification) accession number label as appropriate and that the label is placed so that barcodes are instrument ready. Packages and ships diagnostic specimens to various VA and Commercial reference labs following Department of Transportation (DOT) and International Air Transport Association (IA TA) regulations. Reconciles manifests for diagnostic specimens that are shipped from various remotely located Community Based Outpatient Clinics and VA Medical Centers located throughout the region; checking for uncollected specimens, evaluating· received specimens and determining suitability for analysis, then resolves the status of inappropriately collected and uncollected specimens for each received manifest. Ensures correct routing and distribution bf clinical samples to laboratory sections, informing other staff of sample urgency as necessary. Electronically reports laboratory test result received from multiple VA and Commercial reference labs through the laboratory information system; verifying the methodology and validity of test results received and calling the results of critical values to providers, then documenting the critical value notification in the electronic health record. Provides technical support and assistance to the medical technologists, pathologists and other physicians/providers as needed and assigned. Performs blood collection and specimen handling on inpatients and outpatients according to provider/physician orders. Maintains records of unacceptable samples, reference lab spending, lab procedures and related documents. Complies with all facility and service level mandates for safety, use of personal protective equipment, continuing education, and other mandatory activities. Records information pertaining to the collection, receipt or accessioning of specimens and/or reagents and completes appropriate tracking inventory system information. Scans to the electronic health record; laboratory reports containing elaborate graphs, charts, pictures, or other graphics that cannot be entered through the laboratory information system. Audits test records to ensure appropriate classification, quantity, catalog information, etc. Communicates all issues necessary, such as but not limited to supply requirements, internal and reference lab problems, accidents, unusual provider requests and sample errors. Performs other related duties as assigned.
