This position is located in Pathology & Laboratory Service. Histopathology Technician's (HT) at this level have a higher level of responsibility for technical oversight, and are expected to carry out assigned tasks independently. HT's will have the responsibility of performing specialized histological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical procedures, develop, modify, or adapt new staining methods or techniques, improve existing methods as necessary for routine histotechnology proedures. The duties of this position are but not limited to the following: Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures including all processing tasks of the histopathology technician occupation involving anatomic pathology. Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for diagnostic evaluation. Maintains and documents the optimal function of laboratory equipment. Performs and documents quality control, quality assurance and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and theories. Ensures and maintains accurate patient identification through chain of custody of the specimen. Utilizes specialized techniques for handling cell blocks, frozen sections, bone marrows, autopsies, and fine-needle biopsies. Examines slides under a microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements. Identifies problems in processing and staining procedures and makes necessary adjustments as needed for diagnostic purposes. Uses cryostat to cut frozen sections as required for rapid diagnosis in the Operating Room. Maintains an accurate filing system or organization of histological materials so the blocks, slide, and tissues are retrievable with minimum effort. Trains other healthcare professional and administrative staff concerning Anatomical Pathology and Cytology specimen collection.
