The Cytotechnologist position is located within the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service for VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS) located in Portland, Oregon. The Cytotechnologist position is located within the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service for VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS) located in Portland, Oregon. Duties include but are limited to the following: Serves as a physician-extender for the cytopathology section of anatomic pathology to provide a full range of cytologic services and consultative opinions in support of VA Portland Health Care System ((VAPORHCS) and associated regional health care facilities. Determines the suitability of cases for accessioning and renders a diagnostic judgment. Based on a variety of complex cytologic judgments and thought, renders a microscopic diagnosis of cases independent of a physician's (pathologist's) interpretation. Independent of direct physician (pathologist) supervision, provides direct patient care for diagnostic support as the authoritative source to the physician by assessing specimen adequacy and tissue structure after case is procured by the fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy, native renal autopsy, liver core, image guided technique, and papable biopsy. Performs an integral part of determining appropriate patient triage from the specimen obtained by FNA for further diagnostic studies. Oversees administrative, clerical and technical support activities of other personnel within the laboratory, coordinating workload and administrative duties. Provides supervisory level quality assurance oversight of peers by re-screening of 10°10 of negative and 100% of all high risk cases. Trains technicians and others in technique, instrumentation and organization of work. Teaches pathology residents and physicians diagnostic cytology criteria through microscopic sessions. Instructs physicians on proper specimen collection and submission. Participates in providing health instruction to physicians, patients and community groups. Researches, tests and implements new procedures and equipment. Assists the Medical Director and resident physicians with research projects. Formulates research hypotheses and study design; mentors and trains junior cytologists. Assures compliance with quality assurance/control and proficiency testing programs, safety standards, accreditation requirements and departmental policies. Provides consultative cytology services to regional sites. Reviews health records to correlate patient history with diagnostic assessment. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7am to 3:30pm OR 8am to 4:30pm Financial Disclosure Report: Not required
