Public Health Laboratory Director

The County of San Diego is seeking a dynamic leader with a passion for building healthy communities. This is a unique opportunity for a qualified individual to work for a Level 3 Public Health Laboratory. The Public Health Services department, in the County’s Health and Human Services Agency is a local health department nationally accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board and first of the urban health departments to beaccredited.
The Public Health Laboratory (PHL) Director reports to the Public Health Officer and is responsible for directing the activities of the Public Health Laboratory. The PHL Director will direct the training of laboratory personnel who perform laboratory activities for the purpose of identifying, controlling, and preventing disease in the community and under administrative direction, develop and implement policies and procedures relatingto the controland prevention of disease and otherhealth threats. The PHL Director works in conjunction with local public health centers, community clinics, hospitals, and healthcare providers, as well as the epidemiology and infectious disease programs in the Department of Public Health Services, and the Department of Environmental Health and Quality. By analyzing clinical and environmental samples, the PHL participates in the core activities of surveillance, assessment,andassurance. The position plays a pivotal leadership role in the planning, development, and implementation of strategies, policies, and practices to advance the Live Well San Diego vision for healthy, safe, and thriving communities throughout the San Diego County region. The PHL Director actively participates in advancing the health strategy agenda, Building Better Health, by working with HHSAprograms and services, other County departments, community partners, and providers to decrease chronic disease and preventable deaths. Collective efforts are focused on improving service delivery systems, pursuing policy, environmental changes, and promoting healthy choices by all County residents to improvethepopulation'shealth.

Qualifications Applicants must possess the following:
Candidates who, before February 24, 2003, have served or are currently serving as a director of a laboratory performing high-complexity testing,will be considered as meeting the qualifications.
