The Supervisory Cytotechnologist position is assigned to the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service of the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center. The incumbent at this level has full supervisory responsibility for a staff performing a broad range of highly complex testing and procedures for the pathological diagnosis of various disease conditions from cellular samples of the human body. As a supervisor, the incumbent develops, reviews, and updates all Anatomic Pathology laboratory procedures including surgical pathology, cytopathology and autopsy; establish and direct all Anatomic Pathology quality control and quality assurance activities; and ensures compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies for the Anatomic Pathology section.

Responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of performance. Assures corrective action is initiated and completed.
Develops and updates technical policy and procedure manuals. Ensures all staff are incompliance with accrediting and regulating bodies, developing and implementing the requirements for the Anatomic Pathology Quality Assurance Program.
Recommends appointment, plans and assigns work, gives advice and counsel, and evaluates work of subordinates.
Prepares and microscopically examines prepared cytological specimens and renders diagnoses including independent immediate evaluation assessment.
Independently screens and evaluates gynecologic cryptologic specimens (Pap smears) for evidence of infection, precancerous changes or malignancy.
Formulates a provisional diagnosis on all atypical gynecologic cytology specimens and on all non-gynecologic specimens, and forwards them to the attending pathologist for review.
Knowledge, organizational, administrative and supervisory skill sufficient to efficiently manage all aspects of not only cytopathology but all anatomic pathology specimen procurement, submission, processing, interpretation and reporting of results.
