The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University is seeking a full-time faculty member at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Integrated Medical Science to be a course director and educator in the curriculum for the first two years of the MD program.
The curriculum is integrated with both basic sciences and clinical skills being taught throughout the first two years. The courses are designed to prepare students by engaging them with active, participatory learning and a small group problem-based approach, integrating medical knowledge, clinical skills, self-directed learning and initiative, and diagnostic reasoning skills to assure their success in a 3rd year curriculum in community-based longitudinal integrated clerkships. Student activities in the courses in Years 1 and 2 include small group case-based discussions, workshops, lectures, laboratory work, exercises with standardized patients, an interprofessional education program with nursing and social work students, a half-day community preceptorship in each year, experiences in clinics for the underserved, simulation activities in the COM's Simulation Center, and a wide range of assessments including OSCEs.
Other essential learning objectives and subject matter are integrated throughout the curriculum including professionalism, team-based patient centered care, complex chronic disease management, health promotion and disease prevention, reflective practice and self-improvement, and evidence-driven decision making. These are complex courses involving multiple full-time, part-time, and volunteer faculty.
Faculty engage in direct teaching, developing instructional materials, student advising, curriculum design, all aspects of assessment of student performance, faculty development, and recruiting of volunteer faculty. Given the demands of the curriculum it is anticipated that this faculty member will engage in teaching activities no less than 4-5 half days per week.
This position will include the expectation of scholarly work. Opportunities for participation in research, leading faculty development, teaching residents, and clinical practice may also be available, depending on the candidate's interests and qualifications.
Ph.D., M.D., D.O. or equivalent degree from an accredited institution and credentials that merit appointment at the rank of assistant professor or higher. Doctoral degree (M.D. or D.O.) candidates must have board certification in their specialty, a Florida medical license or eligibility for a Florida medical licensure. Applicants must have significant teaching experience with medical students, preferably in pharmacology, and demonstrated teaching excellence documented by peer and learner evaluations and teaching awards.
The ideal candidate will have experience and involvement in and/or an understanding of a problem-based small group curriculum. Experience as a course director with a track record of curriculum development at the level of individual sessions, and courses, and experience developing and implementing innovative approaches to education are desirable.
A consistent track record of scholarship including invited lectures, enduring materials, and/or peer reviewed publications is also desirable.
Ability to manage multiple demands and effectively communicate with a variety of students, faculty, and staff from widely diverse backgrounds is required.
