Geisinger Medical Laboratories is seeking a full time Cytologist to join our team in Wilkes Barre PA. We offer a market competitive salary, lucrative sign on bonus and generous benefit package.
The cytopathology laboratories of the Geisinger Medical Laboratories process more than 84,000 cytology cases per year, of which approximately 6,150 are non-gynecologic cases. The laboratory excels in the technique of fine needle aspiration biopsy and in radiographic or sonographic guided biopsies, with on-site evaluation of material obtained by trained cytopathologists. GML performs approximately 1,500 FNAs each year.
Gynecologic testing has gone high-tech in GML Cytopathology. The laboratory is fully automated and incorporates computer-assisted primary screening using the FocalPoint computer. This significantly improves the ability to detect premalignant epithelial lesions.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Screens various cytologic preparations with accuracy and competency; identifies abnormal, malignant, or other significant physiologic states while exercising judgment based on classification criteria established by the department. Signs out negative gynecologic specimen reports. and passes yearly Pap Proficiency Testing.
Assists in the performance of fine needle aspiration as requested. Includes advising clinician of proper specimen collection, performing rapid staining and providing specimen adequacy assessment. Obtains patient history and clinical information as necessary and requests collection of additional specimen for further studies when indicated.
Follows departmental procedures for quality assurance by maintaining 10% rescreening, positive case review, and follow-up notification. Ensures that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems/QA deviate from established performance specifications.
Prepares and processes certain specimens in the Cytopreparatory lab when necessary. Remains familiar with Cytopreparatory techniques.
Assists in the evaluation and validation of new instruments and new technologies as needed under the supervision of the Technical Specialist and Doctoral Director.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
ASCP registered or eligible as CT(ASCP), meeting the following criteria is required: Baccalaureate degree and successful completion of a 12 month accredited Cytotechnology program.
Prior work experience as a Cytotechnologist preferred.
