The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, at Western University, London, Ontario, Canada is inviting applications for the position of Chair in the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology.
The Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology is a multidisciplinary basic science department in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University, serving as the academic home for 31 faculty members (core and joint appointments). The Department has undergone substantial renewal and revitalization with over a third of the faculty joining the Department within the last decade. The Department fosters world-class research and teaching in Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Clinical Anatomy with productive academic and research collaborations with other Departments at Western, affiliated hospitals and research institutes in London and worldwide. Areas of research excellence include: addiction and reward, neural regeneration, auditory processing, sensory filtering and multisensory integration, neurodevelopmental disorders, protein misfolding diseases, Alzheimer’s disease and stroke, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, cancer, channel biology and cell-cell communication, and reproductive/developmental biology. The Department also features strong clinical research in the use of innovative educational devices and imaging modalities in anatomical teaching.
The Department has a strong graduate program consisting of both Biological Research and Clinical Anatomy streams and an innovative undergraduate Honours program in Medical Cell Biology. In addition, the Department provides teaching to medical, dental, science and health science students through undergraduate programs in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and the Faculties of Science and Health Sciences. The core Department consists of approximately 16,000 sq. ft. of renovated space with additional faculty occupying modernized space at the Robarts Research Institute and within the Dental Science Building.
The successful candidate must have a demonstrated and ongoing record of success in research, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and external grant funding, as well as documented excellence in communication and teaching. Given the multidisciplinary nature of the Department, exceptional interpersonal skills are a must with recognized evidence of administrative and leadership skills that are built on a platform of transparency, equity, inclusiveness and consensus building. The new Chair will be expected to champion and mentor by example, in keeping with the vision of the Department to be a world-class leader in research and scholarship. Candidates with awareness and appreciation of the unique breadth of research and teaching required of members of an Anatomy & Cell Biology Department and a clear forward-thinking approach to negotiate on behalf of the Department as a whole, are particularly encouraged to apply. A successful candidate will be expected to foster the shaping of a newly emerging 5 year strategic plan and to motivate, inspire and empower all Faculty members to develop areas of leadership and excellence in keeping with this plan.
Applicants must have a PhD, MD, DDS or equivalent. The position of Chair is for a five year term, normally renewable once. A successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure as appropriate in the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology with the possibility of a joint appointment in another Department at Western University. Compensation for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
