This position is located in the Respiratory Therapy Section of Medicine Service at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center. The staff therapist is responsible for providing basic and advance respiratory care services to adult and geriatric patients. However, the incumbentis responsible for providing basic and advance respiratory care services to adult and geriatric patients. It is necessary to be knowledgeable regarding the basic treatment of all groups of patients. Must have experience planning, implementing, and evaluating the effectiveness of respiratory care and must be able to operate a variety ofequipment including: mechanical ventilators, continuous positive airway pressure devices, pulmonary functions equipment, oxygen monitors/analyzers, co-oximeters and pressure transducers, etc. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Responsible to act as charge/lead therapist in the absence of supervisory personnel and will have full responsibility to modify the workload to accomplish the assigned duties.
Reviews, collects and evaluates relevant clinical data.
Performs both basic and advanced therapeutic procedures for adult and geriatric patients. Ex. monitoring patients receiving mechanical ventilation using techniques that include interpretation of clinical data, describing arterial blood gas values, and acid/base balance.
Assist the physician in formulating an appropriate respiratory care plan based upon patient assessments such as lung auscultation, blood pressure measurements, hemodynamics, cardiac output, etc. The registered therapist may also be involved with patient care planning and/or patient care conferences.
Communicates changes in the Respiratory Care plan with other healthcare team members.
Provides effective education to patients, family, students, and co-workers as appropriate.
Performs both fundamental and advance diagnostic procedures including pulse oximetery arterial puncture, blood gas analysis, pulmonary functions, etc.
Performs emergency and acute respiratory care procedures in accordance with the quality guidelines in the departmental policy and procedure manual.
Actively participates in departmental quality assurance and hospital-wide organizational performance improvement activities. May also participate in Chest Conference as workload permits.
Maintains clinical and professional competency based upon established standards of practice.
Assembles, checks, and corrects malfunctions and performs quality controls on Respiratory Care equipment.
